Wren raids the Robin nest in the kennel

Wren raids the Robin nest in the kennel

May 25, 2024 Elizabeth

We have the 2 American Robin nests we are watching: The Kennel Nest and the Light Nest. The Kennel Nest was built a few days before the Light Nest. Both are in high visibility and high traffic areas of our yard. A pair of robins has tried nesting at the Kennel before and was not successful. I wondered what had gotten the eggs so when we saw them starting a nest here, we moved one of our Blink cameras to keep an eye on things. In the video below you’ll see that during the building process there were several visitors. A female oriole stole some building supplies. A starling pecked around before there were any eggs. And a House Wren checked out the whole area thoroughly before there were any eggs.

Robins lay one egg every day and usually have a clutch of 4 eggs. So, on Day 3 of the laying, is when the attack took place. There were 3 eggs in the nest and the parents were away for just brief periods of time to feed. The House Wren snuck in and you can see him in the video pecking away really viciously. It made me a little teary eyed honestly. I cannot tell if he punctured the eggs and rolled them or if he could not puncture them. I went out after the parents had left again and took a picture to see what things looked like. There’s still 3 eggs and I cannot see any punctures. I didn’t try checking the other side of the eggs.

The same wren has been checking out the lamp nest also. You’ll see that at the end of the video as well. stay tuned to see how things turn out!
