Spring Migrator Updates

Spring Migrator Updates

May 8, 2024 Elizabeth

So – most of our spring migrators have been seen. I caught a glimpse of an Eastern Bluebird (no pic) on 5/6/2024 – but it hardly even landed and it got scared away. The orioles are back in large numbers. We regularly have 3 males and 3 females (coming separately mostly for now). The rose breasted grosbeaks have assumed their control over the black oiler feeders where they like to sit and take their time. We’ve seen a few brown thrashers but we aren’t seeing them everyday. I think perhaps robins took over the area where they had nested previously. We have a TON of robins. We have seen ruby throated hummingbirds. I’m hopeful we’ll continue to see more of those. We have seen the Northern Flickers a bit – and there are a TON of ant hills. White Crowned sparrows are here everyday and we’ve also seen chipping sparrow. We have NOT yet spotted any Eastern Towhee this year. We usually will see them occasionally in the spring in the leaf litter on the margins of our yard.

Here’s a couple of images from the front yard feeders recently.

We still don’t have a lot of flowers blooming at this time of year. I need to plant more things that bloom in this period between spring and summer. We only really had 5 tulips form flowers this year. The daffodils did really well but are all done now. We have 2 Allium that are getting ready to blossom. I have planted 4 more of those. I have a coral bell that is blooming – but the other isn’t yet. Gramma’s onions are getting ready to bloom. I have a bleeding heart that I didn’t think was going to make it but it has come back but no blossoms yet. The apple tree bloomed but the rain brought down the flowers. So – let me know ideas you have for plants that are flowering in your yards now! I need to add some things this fall that will be come back and be blooming at this time next spring.

I decided to cut one of my 5 tulips (they were all yellow) so that I could get maximum enjoyment out of it in my window. Here’s the view of the Flower at my Window.
