First Successful Monarch 2022

First Successful Monarch 2022

July 29, 2022 Elizabeth

We have had 2 Chrysalis hanging for little over a week. I’ve nicknamed them “Soul” (on the swamp milkweed known as “Soulmate”) and “Iris” (on the Iris). Soul was formed a little over 24 hours before Iris and I expected Soul to emerge any day now. I had the camera on Soul this morning expecting it to emerge, but lo and behold, Iris picked today to emerge, clearly because I wasn’t filming.

Here’s a sequence of Iris from caterpillar to J-Hang to fresh Chrysalis and eventually to butterfly.

Here’s a time lapse of the monarch stretching it’s wings and preparing for first flight.

I’m still holding out hope that Soul will emerge successfully. I saw Iris hanging around this afternoon a little and I’m hoping that I’ll get another batch of caterpillars in August!

I have not lost the wonder and amazement for watching this transformation.
