Spring Sighting – Spotted Salamander

Spring Sighting – Spotted Salamander

April 4, 2023 Elizabeth

Duke had Steve up at 3:30am to go out & he saw this guy on our side porch. He came & got me up because he thought it was the same salamander we rescued last week from the egress. However, it turns out it is our 2nd species of salamander we’ve seen for 2023. Last week was a blue spotted salamander that had dark blue feet & spots. This one is just “spotted salamander” or sometimes yellow spotted salamander. One of their characteristics is the grey/pink underbelly & feet. This guy was out eating earthworms in the cool rain.

Now I’m on a mission to see how many of the Michigan salamander species we can see before the end of the year.

Update — The next night it was a bit colder, but Steve spotted our little porch salamander peeking out from underneath.
