We foster Duke

We foster Duke

January 8, 2019 Elizabeth

Well, this is a thing that happened this week. Meet Duke. He’s our foster basset. We are fostering thru Basset Hound Rescue of Michigan with an option to adopt. He’s 8 years old, 73 pounds (Woah!), Pretty vocal, very snuggly, friendly with people & dogs, curious about cats, loves walks in the yard. He’s been recently separated from 2 siblings/litter mates and his mother. He’s a little emotional still but adapting well. He’s not crate trained, doesn’t know any basic obedience like sit, down or stay. He & Tilda are starting to get along. She’s still a little extra sometimes & he is unsure about her. He’s a counter cruiser so we have some adaptation to do for all that. So far he hasn’t been able to hold it while we are at work but that likely has to do with how agitated he is in the crate & his water consumption so we need to figure that out He’s been to the vet. He has a lump on his shoulder & under his armpit. The one under his armpit is a bit red & agitated looking because he was in a harness & we think it was rubbing. We are treating an ear infection. We are a little concerned because he has some excessive water consumption. He’s drinking about 3 times as much water as Tilda. We were told he didn’t like his feet touched but after a nail trim (they were SO long) he doesn’t really seem to mind it at all from us. He just loves to be touched/petted anywhere. This is a brand new experience for us & we are focused on just trying to help him adapt to a new normal. Certain things about his looks (like this picture) really remind us of Quincy. We are grateful for this opportunity thru BHROM, they hadn’t considered us before because of no fence but they had so many bassets coming in they called our references & gave us a chance. Hopefully this spring/summer we’ll be getting a fence. Accepting any tips about working with an older (pretty stubborn)dog.
